Photo of the Week - brain-eating amoeba

A microscopic view of the brain-eating amoeba known as Naegleria fowleri reveals a trio of feeding structures, twisted into a macabre clown-face. The parasitic organism – which lives in warm bodies of fresh water – has infected 128 people since 1962. Only one has survived.

Photo of the Week - Hugo Boss Ad from 1940´s?

Probably it´s not real or authentic but it very well might be.

"Hugo Boss started his clothing company in 1924 in Metzingen. His company was supplier for Nazi uniforms since 1924. Hugo Boss was one of the firms contracted by the Nazis to design the black SS uniforms along with the brown SA shirts, and the Hitler Youth uniforms."

Photo of the Week - Wooly mammoth found in Siberia with preserved blood

Woolly mammoths could be brought back from extinction after scientists discover blood and muscle tissue buried in an ice tomb for 10,000 years

According to The Siberian Times, the blood will now be made available to South Korean scientists seeking to use mammoth DNA to bring creatures back to life.

The find - said to be the first time mammoth blood has been discovered - comes amid a hotly contested debate over the morality of Jurassic Park-style projects to restore extinct creatures to the planet, with some scientists insisting it will be impossible to get exactly the same mammoths as once roamed Siberia.

Photo of the Week - Atom´s electron orbital

What you’re looking at is the first direct observation of an atom’s electron orbital — an atom's actual wave function! To capture the image, researchers utilized a new quantum microscope — an incredible new device that literally allows scientists to gaze into the quantum realm.

An orbital structure is the space in an atom that’s occupied by an electron. But when describing these super-microscopic properties of matter, scientists have had to rely on wave functions — a mathematical way of describing the fuzzy quantum states of particles, namely how they behave in both space and time.

Typically, quantum physicists use formulas like the Schrödinger equation to describe these states, often coming up with complex numbers and fancy graphs. Up until this point, scientists have never been able to actually observe the wave function. Trying to catch a glimpse of an atom’s exact position or the momentum of its lone electron has been like trying to catch a swarm of flies with one hand; direct observations have this nasty way of disrupting quantum coherence.

What’s been required to capture a full quantum state is a tool that can statistically average many measurements over time. But how to magnify the microscopic states of a quantum particle? The answer, according to a team of international researchers, is the quantum microscope — a device that uses photoionization microscopy to visualize atomic structures directly.

Photo of the Week - Rover wheels marks on Mars

Nasa's $800m Mars Exploration Rovers have accidentally drawn a penis.

Humorously, depending on your age perhaps, that has the unfortunate consequenceof drawing a certain shape on the surface, which when discovered by Reddit essentially crashed Nasa's website.

Photo of the Week - Homeless Jesus statue in Toronto

Timothy Schmalz has been sculpting Jesus for 25 years, but he’s never created a statue quite like this. The Ontario-based artist said that this new version of Jesus is meant to provoke.
